Description

Male mallard ducks spend much of their free time bathing and preening. They dip into the
water, then lift up, flap their wings, and shake the water off. This behavior gives spectators a
chance to appreciate the finely-shaped wing plumage. Both male and female mallards have
striking iridescent blue speculum feathers on their wings. Unlike most birds that use bright
colors to attract a mate, the mallard's speculum feathers do not appear to be used in breeding
rituals. One theory is that the ducks use them as visual cues to form a cohesive flock.
