Description
Carrion-eaters like this American black vulture play an important role in the ecosystem. By
eating carcasses they eliminate deadly bacteria from the environment. Their stomach acid is
corrosive enough to digest rotten flesh infected with botulism, cholera, and anthrax. They also
urinate on their own legs to cool down and to destroy bacteria built up from climbing over
putrid meat. The American black vulture is smaller than other vultures, but it can use the power
of numbers to steal dinner from its solitary cousin, the Turkey vulture.
