Description
Turkey tail mushrooms are some of the most commonly found mushrooms in North America.
The scientific name Trametes versicolor aptly conveys the vast array of colors presented in the
fuzzy textured bands of this fungus. The sharply contrasting color zones are often shades from
grey to tan to brown to rust, but occasionally they will produce shades of green, blue, or
orange. The fungus is velvety on top, with soft spongy flesh and tube-like small holes on the
underside where spores are released. Deadwood or stumps from deciduous hardwoods are good environments for Turkey tails to proliferate.
