Description
Squirrels are easily identifiable because of their long bushy tails. You may think that their fluffy tail fur functions to keep them warm, but it actually serves multiple purposes. These critters use their tails for shade in the heat of summer, and as a way to communicate danger to other squirrels. If you see a squirrel sitting perfectly still and then flicking its tail three times, you will know that it is telling other squirrels, “Danger is nearby! Watch out!” It also helps them balance while climbing trees and acts as a parachute to help create drag when a squirrel jumps or falls from a great height. Humans also find squirrel tails useful to evaluate the age of the animal, as young squirrels have black stripes on the underside of their tails and adults do not.
